What Are Micronutrients and Why Do They Matter?

Micronutrients are the vitamins and minerals your body needs in relatively small amounts — but their impact is anything but small. They regulate nearly every biological process, from converting food into energy to keeping your immune system and bones functioning properly. Unlike macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, and fat), micronutrients don't supply calories, but a shortage of even one can affect how the whole system runs.

Vitamins are organic compounds, meaning they come from living things and can be broken down by heat, air, or acid. Minerals are inorganic elements sourced from soil and water that plants and animals absorb. Both categories are essential — your body either can't make them at all, or can't make enough on its own.

Micronutrient

Vitamins and minerals required by the body in small amounts to support essential biological functions. Unlike macronutrients, they provide no calories.

Fat-soluble vitamin

Vitamins A, D, E, and K, which dissolve in fat and are stored in the body's fatty tissue and liver. They can accumulate to potentially harmful levels if over-supplemented.

Water-soluble vitamin

Vitamin C and the B vitamins, which dissolve in water and are not stored in large amounts. They need to be replenished regularly through food.

Heme iron

A form of iron found in animal foods like meat and poultry that is more efficiently absorbed by the body compared to non-heme iron from plant sources.

Daily Value (DV)

A reference amount set by the FDA representing how much of a nutrient a typical adult should consume per day. Used on Nutrition Facts labels to show percentage of needs met per serving.

Antioxidant

A compound that helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Several vitamins, including C and E, act as antioxidants in the body.

Key Vitamins: Functions and Food Sources

Vitamins fall into two groups based on how the body stores them:

  • Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) are stored in body fat and the liver. Because they accumulate, excessive supplementation can cause toxicity — a reason to approach high-dose supplements cautiously.
  • Water-soluble vitamins (C and the eight B vitamins) aren't stored in significant amounts, so regular dietary intake matters more. Excess is generally excreted in urine, though very high doses of some B vitamins can still cause adverse effects.

Vitamin A supports vision, immune defense, and skin cell turnover. Find it in liver, dairy, eggs, and as beta-carotene in orange and dark-green vegetables like sweet potatoes and spinach.

Vitamin D is critical for calcium absorption and bone strength, and plays a role in immune function. Fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy or plant milks provide dietary sources; the skin also synthesizes it from sunlight exposure.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that supports collagen production and immune response. Citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, and strawberries are excellent sources.

B vitamins — including B12, folate, thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin — are collectively involved in energy metabolism and nervous system health. B12 is found almost exclusively in animal products, making it a common consideration for those eating plant-based diets. Essential Minerals and Where to Find Them

Minerals are typically divided into major minerals (needed in larger amounts) and trace minerals (needed in smaller amounts, but still essential).

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body, central to bone density, muscle contraction, and nerve signaling. Dairy products, fortified plant milks, tofu made with calcium sulfate, and dark leafy greens like kale are reliable sources.

Iron carries oxygen through the blood via hemoglobin. Heme iron from red meat and poultry is more readily absorbed than non-heme iron from legumes, tofu, and fortified cereals — consuming the latter with vitamin C helps improve uptake.

Magnesium participates in hundreds of enzyme reactions and helps regulate blood pressure, blood sugar, and muscle function. Nuts, seeds, whole grains, and leafy greens are solid sources.

Zinc is essential for immune function, wound healing, and DNA synthesis. Oysters, red meat, poultry, beans, and pumpkin seeds provide it.

Potassium helps balance fluids, supports muscle function, and is associated with healthy blood pressure. Bananas, potatoes, beans, and yogurt are common sources.

Iodine is needed for thyroid hormone production. It's found in seafood, dairy, and iodized table salt.
