Deliberate Practice
A structured form of practice — developed and described by psychologist K. Anders Ericsson — that focuses specifically on the edge of your current ability, incorporates immediate feedback, and targets identified weaknesses rather than repeating comfortable tasks. It is distinct from casual repetition.
Spaced Repetition
A study technique that schedules review sessions at increasing intervals over time, rather than cramming material in one sitting. The approach exploits the 'spacing effect,' a well-replicated finding in memory research showing that distributed practice produces stronger long-term retention.
Retrieval Practice
The act of actively recalling information from memory rather than passively re-reading it. Testing yourself — even informally — strengthens memory traces more effectively than reviewing material. Also called the 'testing effect' in cognitive psychology literature.
Interleaving
Mixing different skills, topics, or problem types within a single practice session, rather than mastering one before moving to the next (blocked practice). Research suggests interleaving feels harder but often produces better long-term skill transfer and discrimination between concepts.
Desirable Difficulty
A challenge that makes learning feel harder in the moment but leads to more durable understanding over time. Examples include using retrieval practice instead of re-reading, or introducing spacing between study sessions. The concept was developed by cognitive psychologist Robert Bjork.
Transfer of Learning
The ability to apply a skill or piece of knowledge in a new context beyond where it was originally learned. 'Near transfer' involves very similar situations; 'far transfer' involves applying principles across substantially different domains.
Growth Mindset
A belief system, associated with psychologist Carol Dweck's research, holding that abilities can be developed through effort, effective strategies, and guidance — as opposed to a fixed mindset, which treats talent as static. Mindset influences how learners respond to setbacks and challenges.
Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)
A concept from psychologist Lev Vygotsky describing the gap between what a learner can do independently and what they can do with guided support. Effective instruction and feedback target this zone, keeping challenges productive rather than overwhelming.
Scaffolding
Temporary support structures — hints, models, simplified tasks, or guided questions — that help learners perform a task they could not yet complete alone. Good scaffolding is gradually removed as competence grows, avoiding long-term dependency.
Elaborative Interrogation
A study strategy that involves asking 'why' and 'how' questions about material rather than simply reading or repeating facts. By forcing connections to prior knowledge, it deepens understanding and makes information more retrievable later.
Worked Example Effect
A finding in instructional design research showing that novice learners often benefit more from studying fully solved examples than from problem-solving independently. As expertise grows, the benefit shifts toward independent practice — a pattern sometimes called the 'expertise reversal effect.'
Applying These Concepts Together
